What are all the different ways to set links with SiteGrinder?

This page will give you an overview of all the ways that are available along with links for further exploration. Many of these linking techniques support email linking. See the linked in depth documentation for details.

Automatically Creating Button And Menu Links By Matching Page Names

You don't need to manually add hyperlinks to buttons or text menu items whose names match page names you have set with SiteGrinder. SiteGrinder will match them up automatically when it builds.

If you have a layer comp or page definition page named, for example, "Gallery" and one or more buttons named "gallery-button" then nothing else needs to be done for SiteGrinder to program the button link. This is the easiest way to set links.

Setting Links For Text & Graphic Buttons Using The "-link" Hint

If you have a text or graphic layer (or layer set) to which you have added the "-button" hint and you wish to manually enter a link, you can do so by adding a type layer matching the name of the button and typing the link into the contents of the layer.

A layer named, for example, "google-button" will use the contents of a type layer named "google-link" as its hyperlink.

Setting Links Inside Text Blocks By Just Adding URLs To A Text Layer

There are two methods for adding links inside blocks of text. The quickest is to simply type URLs directly into the text. Then set the Anti-Alias setting of the text layer to "None". This will tell SiteGrinder to treat the layer as real HTML text. SiteGrinder automatically scans these layers and makes clickable any URLs or email addresses it finds in them.

A type layer named, for example, "some info-text" which contains the text "I really like this website: http://www.medialab.com" will look something like this on the final page:

I really like this website: http://www.medialab.com

Setting Links Inside Text Blocks Using The "-links" Hint

If you would like to add a link to specific subphrases of text in a block of text you use two layers in conjunction. The first layer is a type layer that contains the block of text. It is best to set that layer's anti-alias setting to "None", or, alternately, give it the "-text" hint.

The second layer will be a text layer that contains a list of the phrases you want to add links to and the URLs for those links. You will add the "-links" hint (plural) to that layer. "-links" layers have a specific format for phrase matching.

Setting Links For Buttons & Menu Items Using SiteGrinder's Button Panel

All text buttons, graphic buttons, and menu items show up in a list in SiteGrinder's Button Panel when you open SiteGrinder. This is perhaps the most powerful way to set links as you can add file links, email links, and even a "literal link" which will copy anything you type as a link for total flexibility.
