- Storage. Immediately after resuspension, Platelets shall be placed in storage at the selected temperature range. If stored at 20 to 24°C, a continuous gentle agitation of the platelet concentrate shall be maintained throughout the storage period. Agitation is optional if stored at a temperature between 1 and 6°C.*
- Emergency provisions. The use of the plateletpheresis procedure to obtain a product for a specific recipient may be at variance with 640.21(c) and 640.22(c): Provided, That: (a) A licensed physician has determined that the recipient must be transfused with the platelets from a specific donor, and (b) the plateletpheresis procedure is performed under the supervision of a qualified licensed physician who is aware of the health status of the donor and the physician has certified in writing that the donor's health permits plateletpheresis.
* Note that although it is allowed by the Code of Federal Regulations, very few facilities store Platelets between 1 and 6°C. The AABB requires facilities to use 20-24°C.
