Introduction

On March 26, 2012, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) published its Final Rule, which updated the Hazard Communication Standard to align with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS).
GHS is a worldwide initiative to promote standard criteria for classifying chemicals according to their health hazards, physical hazards, and environmental hazards. It uses pictograms, hazard statements, and signal words like “Danger” and “Warning” to communicate hazard information on product labels and safety data sheets (SDSs).
The primary goal of GHS is to protect human health and the environment by providing chemical users and handlers, emergency first responders, and the public with enhanced and consistent information on chemical hazards.
The information that is included in this course is in compliance with the GHS elements in the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard.
