Preanalytical Considerations

Collection errors can lead to discrepant ABO test results. Preventing preanalytical errors is necessary to ensure accurate and safe patient testing.
  • Patient identification must be ensured prior to venipuncture. If possible, verbally validate identification while reading the patient identification band. Always identify a patient with at least two patient identifiers, including full name and a unique number, such as hospital or medical record number.
  • Samples must be properly collected in the correct collection tube and labeled at the patient's bedside to ensure validity and sample integrity.
  • Patient identification systems that use barcode technology also aid in correct identification of patient and specimen collection tubes.
