Patrick is a five-year-old patient who is brought to the urgent care clinic by their parents due to concerns about weight loss, "belly pain," and fatigue. The parents state that Patrick has complained of belly pain and fatigue for approximately four months. They state that this came on gradually over time, and they have tried giving Patrick over-the-counter medicines for stomach acid and nausea, but they do not seem to help. Now they feel as if Patrick is beginning to lose weight.
Patrick has been healthy and has received all recommended vaccinations. The patient has not been to a regular pediatrician for around eight months but was reportedly doing well at the last visit. Upon further questioning, Patrick says they have trouble producing stool sometimes and that it hurts when they need to pass a bowel movement. The patient says their stomach hurts “all over” all the time and that they have pain in their head.
