JC polyomavirus (JCV) is one of two human pathogenic polyomaviruses. A DNA virus, JCV causes a devastating infection to the central nervous system of immunocompromised patients called progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). Generally, oligodendrocytes within the white matter of the brain are the target cells of this virus.
Anti-human SV40 monoclonal antibody, clone MRQ-4 requires heat-induced epitope retrieval (HIER) pretreatment with citrate buffer for demonstration of JCV in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue sections. Positive cells are identified with round, enlarged nuclei, having a ground glass appearance.
In the image, virus-like particles in the nuclei of abnormal oligodendrocytes are labeled with mouse monoclonal SV40 antibody, clone MRQ-4. DAB chromogen is employed.
