Summary

This scenario demonstrates how an EBP approach can be used to aid in decision-making when purchasing a new laboratory instrument. The same approach can be used to evaluate any process change in the laboratory.
  • Always start with one or more focused questions, keeping in mind that you want to arrive at a solution that will improve quality and ensure positive patient outcomes.
  • Use search tools that will guide you toward evidence that is relevant and valid.
  • Appraise the evidence that you've gathered, using inclusion and exclusion criteria.
  • Base your recommendation(s) on the evidence, which represents best practices so that others affected by the change will accept the recommendation.
  • After the change has been implemented, remember to evaluate (audit) the change to be sure it is having the desired effect.
