Embedding Skin Tissue

Thorough training and consistency in embedding techniques are the keys to production of optimal microscopic slides. Each step in tissue processing is critical and dependent on the previous step; however, embedding skin in the proper orientation truly has the most impact on the diagnostic outcome. In blocks that contain improperly embedded skin, the areas of diagnostic importance MAY BE CUT AWAY and a diagnosis may not be possible. Skin resampling is not typically performed since the area of interest is isolated and sampled only once. Histotechnologists get only one shot to get it right. The following pages represent proper embedding techniques for skin samples.
