Group 5--Coprine

This toxin inhibits the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase (referred to as ADH). ADH is produced in the liver and helps convert alcohol eventually into acetate and other molecules that can be used by the body’s cells. Coprine is similar in action (but chemically different) to Antabuse in that it interferes with the metabolism of alcohol. In fact, coprine, after the ingestion of alcohol will give Antabuse like symptoms. These may include flushed skin, vomiting, headache, dizziness, weakness, apprehension, confusion, tachycardia, and dyspnea. Symptoms may appear immediately or up to five days following alcohol consumption. This toxin is considered non-lethal. It is the principal toxin found in the genus Coprinopsis.
