Endothelial Dysfunction

The endothelium is the thin layer of cells at the inner lining of blood vessels. Endothelial dysfunction is a pathological state where the dynamic balance between needed vasodilation and vasoconstriction is undermined. Endothelial dysfunction is also a preclinical stage of atherosclerosis and a precursor of future cardiovascular disease. Inflammation from increased levels of inflammatory adipokines is one factor in the development of endothelial dysfunction.
