Creating a project charter is one of the most important outputs of the Define phase. A project charter should have the following elements:
- Project name
- Business case
- Will most likely be given to the team by the senior/executive management of the organization.
- Statement of the problem
- Should be simple but provide a more specific description of the problem that needs to be addressed by the Six Sigma project than the business case description. Opinion, perception, and blame should not be included as part of the problem statement.
- Goal statement
- A project has one goal. The goal statement must define the final outcome of the project in terms that everyone will understand. The goal statement must contain measurable results and a description of what will be accomplished.
- Team leader and members names
- Project scope
- The scope of the project should clearly define the boundaries and limitations of the project.
- Stakeholders
- Anyone who has an interest in the outcome of the project.
- Preliminary timeline
