OSHA BBP Standard: Engineering Controls

Engineering controls isolate the worker from the hazard of exposure to BBP by physically changing an instrument or laboratory environment. Examples of engineering controls include:
  • Bench top splashguards
  • Biological safety cabinets (BSCs)
  • Instrumentation with closed tube sampling
  • Needle safety devices (eg, self-sheathing needles)
  • Plastic blood collection tubes
  • Plastic capillary tubes
  • Rigid sharps disposal containers
