Borrelia miyamotoi was first identified in Ixodes scapularis ticks in 1996, but the first human cases were not reported until 2011. Cases from Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island have been reported. Only about 1.9% of I. scapularis carry this organism, while 19% of these ticks carry Lyme disease. It is possible for the tick to carry B. miyamotoi in addition to Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and babesiosis.
