Graves' Disease

Mechanism
  • Autoimmunity
    • Production of thyrotropin receptor antibody (TRAb) to block thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)
    • Production of Thyroid stimulating immunoglobulin (TSI) to stimulate thyroid hormone production
  • Leads to HYPERthyroidism
Symptoms
  • Exophthalamos (abnormal protrusion of eyeball(s)
  • Anxiety and nervousness
  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Rapid heartbeat
Prevalence
  • Female to male ratio - 8:1
  • Approximately 0.5% of population
  • Likely under age 40 at diagnosis
