Once workplace hazards have been identified, they need to be controlled in order to prevent workplace violence. All efforts should be made by the employer and employees to minimize hazard risks by introducing engineering and work practice controls.
Workplace violence can be prevented by being proactive and minimizing hazards. Examples include, but are not limited to:
- Minimum two employees working together
- Having a well-lit parking area
- Minimizing access to the facility after regular visiting/client hours
- Registering visitors before entering the facility
- Providing escorts to the parking areas
- Limiting the amount of cash on hand (eg, in the pharmacy)
- Posting laws about violence in the workplace in visible areas
