Auer rods in peripheral blood or bone marrow blasts are important as they would upgrade a patient's case to high-grade MDS (MDS-EB-2). Refer to the image below to review the morphology of blasts containing Auer rods.
Note: If the blast count in the blood or bone marrow exceeds 19%, the diagnosis is acute myeloid leukemia (AML), not MDS.
