Updates to Document Control for 12/21

At MediaLab, we're continually working with our customers to enhance Document Control. See below for updates planned for 12/21.

There's no action that you need to take. All updates will be applied automatically on our servers on December 21st, 2012. The system will remain functional during updates.

Provide a custom version number when uploading existing documents
Previously, Document Control always started numbering versions of a document from v1.0, even if it was an existing document with a custom document number. You can now specify the starting version number for each document you add, so that the version numbers can be continuous with your previous system.

Set a future effective date when starting an approval process
Previously, only the lab director could set the effective date of the document. You told us that it would make more sense if the individual starting the approval process could set the effective date of the document, as the lab director sometimes overlooked setting the date. We've added this as requested.

Custom document types
Previously, you could only choose from our pre-defined document types: Policy, Procedure, Form, Job aid, Worksheet, Attachment / supporting info, Manufacturer's insert, and Other. Now, you can add, rename, and remove document types to match your organization's preferred terminology.

Big under-the-hood improvements to document viewing
We worked hard to improve speed across the system, especially for viewing and reading documents. Our testing shows that documents now load 2x to 5x faster.
